My School Magazine

I think the best bits of my school magazine is that on the front page i've put the main story accompanied by pictures relating to it then the smaller stories in stars at the bottom of the page, I also think on my contents page my main stories of the week are a main part of my page. I think the part of my school magazine which could be improved and I would do differently if I had the chance would be on my contents page I could have put the page numbers to what page the information will be on, which would be easier/helpful for the reader of the magazine.

I identified the codes and conventions of a magazine as I used a masthead for my headline "Epsom and Ewell Weekly," a sub heading "How the 2012 London Olympics inspired us," the main story on the front page with the pictures relating to the main story. I have also put the date and what issue of the school magazine it is on my front page so the audience know what issue they're reading.

After researching other school magazines I found it quite easy to think of a main story and headline as the London 2012 Olympics have only just finished, I then decided to get sports pictures from my school to go with the main story as they relate to each other. The part of my school magazine which I found hard would be how to layout the other smaller stories on my front page. For my music magazine I would lay out my smaller stories out in an interesting way rather than putting them in stars.

Creating this school magazine has helped me think about making my music magazine for my main project as I have to include all the codes and conventions needed including the masthead, sub heading, page number references, barcode, main stories and pictures. By doing all these I am aiming to create a successful music magazine for my main project.

Similarities and differences between two school magazines
A)

This school magazine front cover uses the title of the magazine as the actual school name in a sans serif font. The colours used are mainly purple/blue with orange, yellow and green text on top in order to stand out. The images seen on the front cover are serious to portray the message that their school is a hard working unit, a filmstrip of 4 other smaller images are also used to show different parts of the school i.e in a class room, outside the front entrance and in a classroom.
The main tagline is"time to get moving"in order to motivate the audience into finishing their school work and go and get a job or carry on in further education. We get an insight to what stories will be included in the magazine as a subheading is about christmas exams, rhetorical questions are also used on the front cover in order to draw the reader in. This magazine does not have a barcode included which implies that it is a free magazine to whoever wants it. Page number references are not included on the front cover - although should be as it is easier for the reader to find the article without having to search through the whole magazine.

-------
B)

This is another school magazine where compared to magazine A seems light hearted and fun. The magazine name is Chenders as is not the actual name of the school it is used for the magazine not to have a serious tone to it. The main image is of a girl with her thumbs up, smiling which does not imply it is a strict school and that this magazine is more of an activity magazine for the school. The text on the front cover shows exactly the stories which are included and also page references of those, so it is easy to find for the audience. The language used is not hard to read and is simplified.
Compared to magazine A the stories included in magazine B is the main difference, magazine A includes stories about continuing with education and about upcoming exams where as magazine B includes stories such as "Top 5 favourite bus sing-alongs" which instantly gives it a light hearted tone. Similarly to magazine A this magazine also does not include a barcode which implies it is free for the audience who wish to read it. At the bottom of the front cover smaller images are shown of pupils having fun at school which is the opposite to the hardworking pictures shown in magazine A.
